On Sunday, Pune City Traffic Police announced that the entry of heavy vehicles at 12 important entry points into the City boundaries has been strictly prohibited for a complete 24 hours. Heavy vehicles include containers, articulated vehicles, trailers etc. 

On these 12 prohibited routes, heavy vehicles will be allowed to commute from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

According to the Deputy Commissioner Of Police Shashikant Borate, a new set of orders regarding the entry of heavy vehicles such as containers, articulated vehicles, trailers, and axle trucks have been issued because several heavy vehicles were observed going through the City limits to shorten the distance, causing severe traffic problems at several locations in the City. 

The 12 points where heavy vehicles are strictly prohibited are; Noble Hospital Square on Solapur Road, Kesnand Phata on Ahmednagar Road, Harris Bridge on Mumbai-Pune Old Highway, Rajiv Gandhi Bridge on Aundh, Hotel Radha Chowk on Baner Road, Chandini Chowk on Paud Road, Vadgaon Bridge Chowk on Sinhagad Road, Katraj Chowk on Satara Road, Khadi Machine Chowk on Katraj Mantarwadi Bypass Road and Bopkhel Phata Chowk on Alandi Road. 

The alternative routes for the prohibited routes are; Vehicles coming from Solapur and going to Satara will be diverted via Hadapsar, Saswad Road, Mantarwadi Phata, Khadi Machine Chowk, Katraj Chowk and Navale Bridge. For Pune-Solapur Road the vehicles will be diverted via Theur Phata, Lonikand and Shikrapur. For the Pune-Ahmednagar Highway, vehicles will be diverted via Shikrapur, Chakan, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Talegaon Dabhade. 

Pune City has recently become a traffic hub. Amidst the construction of Metro, traffic has become one of the city’s biggest issues to overcome. Major areas such as Satara Chowk, Undri Chowk, etc become jammed with traffic during the evening hours around 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM causing delays for commuters.
