Pune Imposes Section 37 for 14 Days Amid Rising Fuel Price Protests; Know What’s Allowed and What’s Restricted in the City
Section 37 has been imposed across Pune city from May 26 for the next 14 days, banning rallies, protests, public meetings and carrying weapons in public places.
The Pune Police administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 37 of the Maharashtra Police Act across the city for 14 days beginning May 26, citing concerns over law and order amid rising protests linked to fuel prices and shortages.
The decision comes after growing public anger over the increase in petrol and diesel prices, which has led to demonstrations, marches and protests by several political parties and social organisations in Pune. Authorities said the restrictions have been introduced to prevent disruption of public peace and traffic movement in the city.

Under the order, citizens will not be allowed to organise or participate in rallies, protests, marches, demonstrations or public meetings during the restriction period. The police have also banned carrying weapons, sticks, swords, stones, spears, explosives or any object that could be used to cause harm in public places.
The order further prohibits inflammatory slogans, provocative speeches, offensive songs and any activity that could disturb communal harmony or public peace. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone violating the restrictions. Police officials can also immediately seize weapons or dangerous materials found during inspections.
Officials clarified that the restrictions have been imposed as a preventive security measure and are aimed at maintaining peace in Pune during a period of heightened tension and public mobilisation.
The administration has also restricted acts such as collecting stones or weapons, displaying objectionable posters or images, and carrying flammable or explosive substances in public areas. Public announcements using loud instruments or speeches that could trigger unrest have also been prohibited.
Police said the order will remain in force for 14 to 15 days. Any further extension will require approval from the Maharashtra government.
The Pune Police has appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities, avoid rumours and help maintain peace and order across the city during the restriction period.
