The Kalewadi waste transfer station, inaugurated by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in February, has been non-functional for over four months. According to a senior Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation official, the capsule machine used to compress waste at the centre is out of order due to a missing or stolen part ¹.

The PCMC has activated only three of the proposed 16 waste transfer stations across the city, despite adopting the initiative from Indore Municipal Corporation. Plans to set up two waste transfer stations within each of the eight ward offices have been met with opposition from citizens, slowing progress.

Currently, waste transfer stations are operational in Kalewadi, Kasarwadi, and Gawli Matha areas, handling around 200 metric tonnes of waste daily. The PCMC also has 25-30 roadside open waste collection centres, from which waste is directly transported to the Moshi depot. Pimpri Chinchwad generates an average of 1,200-1,300 metric tonnes of waste daily.

Although the Kalewadi waste transfer station is not compressing waste, it still collects waste from nearby areas and transports it to the Moshi depot without compression.
