Pune: Katraj-Kondhwa Road Widening Project Accelerates as Land Acquisition Process Advances
Pune, December 6, 2024 – The long-pending issue of widening the Katraj-Kondhwa road is gradually moving towards resolution, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) expediting efforts to ease traffic congestion on this key route.
The road has been a source of frustration for commuters due to severe traffic jams, especially during peak hours. In response, the PMC has intensified efforts to accelerate the widening project, which has been delayed for years due to land acquisition hurdles.
Key Developments
- Land Acquisition Progress: Seven landowners have submitted proposals to hand over their properties for the project. The PMC plans to expedite inspections and swiftly acquire the required land to move the project forward.
- Overpass Construction: A flyover is under construction on the stretch, requiring immediate acquisition of 280 meters of road space. This work has been prioritized by the PMC.
- Support from the Government: Union Minister for Road Transport, Nitin Gadkari, has assured the PMC of necessary support once the land acquisition process is completed. His commitment came after discussions with Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhonsle.
Background and Challenges
The project was approved on October 31, 2018, but land acquisition delays have stalled progress. Work on certain sections, including the stretch from Rajs Society to Khadi Machine Chowk, began last year. However, completion depends on resolving outstanding land acquisition issues.
Future Plans
The PMC has introduced a single-window system to streamline the acquisition process and encourage landowners’ cooperation. Additionally, phased construction of grade separators and road widening is underway on specific segments.
The Katraj-Kondhwa road project aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion, enhancing the commuting experience for thousands of citizens who use this route daily.
