Pune, February 22, 2026: A disturbing food safety incident has sparked outrage in Pune after a Kharadi resident found a piece of chicken inside a vegetarian burger ordered from a fast-food outlet in Koregaon Park. The order was placed through the food delivery platform Zomato, raising serious concerns about food handling practices and respect for dietary preferences.
According to the complainant, he had ordered a veg burger from the Burger King outlet located in Koregaon Park, but was shocked to discover a chicken piece inside the burger. “I am a pure vegetarian. This is not just a mistake, it has deeply hurt my religious and personal sentiments. God knows how many other people might be facing the same issue,” he said, expressing emotional distress over the incident.
Following the complaint, Zomato initiated a refund process for the order. However, the resident stated that a refund alone is not enough to address the seriousness of the matter. He has attempted to register a formal complaint with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), but faced difficulties while trying to complete the online registration process.
Determined to seek accountability, he has now decided to approach the Food and Drug Administration Maharashtra (FDA) to lodge an official complaint and demand action against those responsible.
The incident has triggered strong reactions on social media, with many citizens calling for stricter quality control, better segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items, and stronger regulatory oversight. Consumers are demanding transparency, accountability, and stricter enforcement of food safety norms to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
This case once again highlights the urgent need for robust food safety systems and respect for consumer beliefs in a diverse city like Pune.
