A 62-year-old senior citizen in Kothrud was recently cheated of ₹10 lakhs by cyber scammers posing as Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited officials. The victim received a message claiming his gas bill was overdue and would be disconnected if not paid immediately. Believing the message to be genuine, he contacted the provided phone number and was asked to download an APK file and fill out an online application.

Unaware of the danger, this allowed the scammers to access his mobile phone and withdraw ₹10 lakhs from his bank account. The incident came to light when the victim filed a complaint with the authorities.

This shocking case highlights the vulnerability of senior citizens to cybercrime and the need for increased awareness and vigilance. Scammers often target seniors, assuming they may be less familiar with technology and more trusting of official-sounding messages.

Authorities urge citizens to verify the authenticity of messages and phone numbers before taking any action. “Never download unknown APK files or share personal information with unverified sources,” warned a cybersecurity expert.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime and the need for citizens to be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages. By staying informed and vigilant, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from falling prey to such scams.
