Pune Leopard Alert: Trap Cameras and Thermal Drones Deployed After CCTV Sighting in Mundhwa
Pune, December 19, 2025: A leopard was detected inside a residential society in Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa, after its movement was recorded on CCTV cameras during the early hours of Thursday. The footage was promptly shared with the Forest Department, which later confirmed its authenticity.
Following the confirmation, forest officials initiated an extensive search operation across Keshav Nagar and adjoining localities. Thermal drones and trap cameras have been deployed to monitor the animal’s movement, particularly near a nearby nala that has thick vegetation and is considered a potential corridor for wildlife.
An officer from the Forest Department said CCTV footage from surrounding housing societies is being examined to trace the leopard’s route. “After verifying the visuals, our teams began combing the area. Trap cameras have been installed at strategic points, and drone surveillance is underway to locate the animal,” the officer stated.
Pune has witnessed multiple leopard sightings over the past month, with reports emerging from areas such as Pune Airport, Aundh, Bavdhan and Pashan-Sutarwadi. One leopard was successfully captured by forest teams last week following similar sightings.
To ensure public safety, the Forest Department has also started awareness drives among residents, advising them to remain alert and avoid venturing out alone at night. Night patrolling will begin from Thursday night in Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa and nearby areas, with special teams assigned to maintain vigilance.
Officials have urged citizens to report any sightings immediately and cooperate with authorities until the situation is brought under control.
