Pune, May 15, 2026: The Maharashtra government has approved the transfer of more than 52,000 square metres of government land to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to support the ongoing Mula-Mutha Riverfront Development and rejuvenation project.

The decision was taken during a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The approval will allow PMC to receive the land parcels without paying occupancy or revenue charges, resulting in savings of nearly ₹116.63 crore for the civic administration.

Officials said the transferred land includes an 11,015 sqm stretch situated between Sangamwadi Bridge and Bund Garden Bridge in the riverbed area of Sangamwadi. In addition, around 34,128 sqm of land from the Botanical Garden area in Mundhwa and nearly 7,700 sqm belonging to the Women and Child Welfare Department in Mundhwa will also be handed over to PMC for project-related work.

The proposal for the land transfer had earlier been forwarded by the Divisional Commissioner and was later placed before the Cabinet for approval.

Authorities stated that the land will be used exclusively for river rejuvenation and riverfront development activities.Welcoming the decision, city officials said the move would help accelerate the pace of the river improvement project aimed at restoring and beautifying the Mula-Mutha river stretch in Pune.Meanwhile, the PMC Standing Committee also approved a proposal to extend the riverfront development work from Mundhwa to Manjari. Civic officials believe the expansion will strengthen efforts to improve the river ecosystem and create better public spaces along the riverbanks. In another important decision, the Standing Committee cleared a proposal to provide additional land near the PMPML depot for the Balewadi garbage transfer facility following concerns raised after a recent fire incident at the unit.

The committee also approved a heritage conservation proposal for the restoration of the historic Peshwa-era Katraj-to-Shaniwarwada water supply system.

The project aims to preserve the centuries-old underground water network and related structures that once supplied water to Pune city during the Peshwa period.
