Pune, March 24, 2026: A borewell drilling activity in Pune caused damage to an underground metro tunnel, leading to police action against two individuals for endangering public safety and damaging government property.

The incident occurred on March 14 in the Shukrawar Peth area along the underground metro corridor between Shivajinagar and Swargate. According to officials, a resident, Dhananjay Mothe, allegedly carried out drilling work at his house despite being aware of the metro tunnel running beneath the property.

During the operation, the drilling equipment pierced the concrete roof of the tunnel, creating a hole and raising concerns about structural safety. The house is located near the Khadak Police Station. Fortunately, no metro train was passing through at the time, preventing a potentially serious accident.

Officials from Maha Metro said a technical team was immediately dispatched to the site after the incident. The damage, including a hole measuring around six inches in diameter, was promptly repaired. However, authorities noted that the breach caused financial loss and posed risks to passenger safety.

Following the incident, a case has been registered at Khadak Police Station against Mothe and a borewell contractor identified as Jagtap. Police said further investigation is ongoing and appropriate action will be taken.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of following safety guidelines and obtaining necessary clearances before undertaking construction or drilling activities near critical infrastructure.
