Pune-Mumbai Expressway Gets Highway Traffic Management System To Curb Accidents

Super Highway: Mumbai-Pune Expressway Set for 10-Lane Upgrade to Tackle Soaring Traffic
In a bid to reduce speeding and accidents, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and state transport department are implementing the Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) on the Pune-Mumbai expressway.
The HTMS includes 430 high-end CCTV cameras installed along the 94-kilometer stretch, covering both sides of the expressway. These cameras will monitor and detect speeding, lane-changing, and other traffic violations. The system also enables automatic fine imposition on violators based on exact speeds detected.
“The installation work of all the cameras has been completed, and we have handed over the system to the state transport department,” said Rahul Vasaikar, MSRDC’s superintending engineer while talking to media. “Now, the trial runs of this entire system are going on, and soon it will be fully operational.”
The Pune-Mumbai expressway is notorious for its mix of straight roads, ghat sections, tunnels, and natural attractions, making it prone to accidents. The HTMS aims to minimize these incidents by enhancing road safety. Boards displaying speed limits have been installed along the expressway, and the HTMS integrates with artificial intelligence for efficient traffic management.
Once operational, authorities can take action against reckless drivers, imposing fines for speeding and lane-cutting. This initiative is part of a broader plan to implement Intelligent Traffic Management Systems on nine highways in Maharashtra, as announced in the state budget for 2023-24.
The HTMS is expected to significantly reduce accidents on the expressway, providing a safer commute for travelers. With its advanced features and integration with AI, the system sets a new standard for traffic management in Maharashtra.
