With the escalating volume of waste in Pune city, waste transportation has emerged as a pressing issue. To address this challenge, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a proactive step by introducing three advanced trucks into its fleet. These state-of-the-art trucks have the capacity to transport 20 to 22 tons of waste efficiently. The official inauguration of these trucks was conducted today, with Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil presiding over the event.

The PMC acquired these three trucks, at a cost of approximately two and a half crore rupees, on an experimental basis using funds provided by the central government for solid waste management through the 15th Finance Commission. Notably, these trucks are equipped with cutting-edge walking floor systems, designed to enhance operational efficiency, and municipal employees will receive training to effectively utilize this technology.

Presently, waste transportation in the municipal corporation relies on highway trucks. However, these trucks have limited carrying capacities of 5 to 10 tons and lack waste compression systems, resulting in prolonged filling and unloading times, as well as frequent spillage.

In contrast, the newly introduced trucks feature a revolutionary walking floor system that enables rapid waste filling within 10 minutes. The waste is automatically compacted inside the truck, allowing a single Keith truck to accommodate the waste equivalent to three highway trucks. This significant increase in capacity not only reduces transportation costs but also minimizes waste spillage during unloading, as highlighted by Raut.

PMC’s decision to incorporate these state-of-the-art trucks into its waste management operations demonstrates its commitment to improving efficiency and tackling the waste transportation challenges faced by Pune city.

The launch ceremony took place at Sanas Ground near Sarasbaug and was attended by Khadkwasla constituency MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, Additional Commissioner Dr. Kunal Khemnar, President of KEITH Company Lindsay Foster Drago, Director Varun Gajra, and Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department.
