Pune, January 28, 2025: In an effort to resolve the ongoing congestion issues on Nagar Road and surrounding areas, members of the Nagar Road Citizens Forum and Viman Nagar Citizens Forum met with Bapusaheb Pathare, MLA of Wadgaonsheri, to personally submit their petitions. The petitions, initially emailed on December 14, 2024, were accompanied by supporting documents obtained through the RTI Act 2005.
The main issue addressed by the citizens is the lack of road widening along Nagar Road, where 14 critical locations have not been acquired for widening as per the Development Plan (DP) 1987. Despite repeated appeals to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the citizens claim their requests have been repeatedly ignored, leading to severe traffic congestion on this vital route.
The petition urges MLA Bapusaheb Pathare to take immediate action and address the issue with PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale. If the matter remains unresolved, the petitioners have requested that the MLA escalate the issue to Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, asking for state funds to be allocated to facilitate the necessary road improvements.
The citizens argue that the failure to acquire land for road widening and development is directly impacting the daily commute of thousands of residents and creating unnecessary congestion. The petition includes a list of survey numbers and locations where road widening and development have yet to be carried out, which are essential for alleviating traffic on Nagar Road. Key locations cited in the petition include survey numbers 1966, 1968, and 1969.
Additionally, the petition highlights the incomplete Shivane-Kharadi Bypass Road, which has been under construction for over 10 years. The petitioners state that completing both phases of the bypass would divert a significant portion of traffic from Nagar Road. Phase 1 alone is expected to reduce traffic by 30%, while Phase 2 could alleviate an additional 20%.
Another major concern raised by the petitioners is the severe congestion in the residential area of Viman Nagar. Narrow streets, illegal parking, and a lack of alignment with the DP 1987 have worsened the traffic situation. The growth of IT companies and educational institutions in the area has added to the problem, as staff and students frequently park on public roads instead of using designated parking lots.
The petition also outlines specific road width discrepancies, urging PMC to bring the roads in the area in line with the DP 1987 specifications. Some of the roads mentioned include VIP Airport Road, Mhada Road, and Malhotra Road. The residents of Nagar Road hope that their concerns will be addressed promptly and that necessary steps will be taken to improve road infrastructure and alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
