For the last many years, the residents of Nancy Garden in Wanowrie have been struggling to get rid of the problem caused by the Pune Cantonment Board slaughterhouse. The PCB facility discharges blood into the nullah which is located near the society.

Despite numerous complaints to the Pune Municipal Corporation as well as Pune Cantonment Board, there seems to be no action from either of the authorities.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Shivaji Shinde, secretary of the society said, “The slaughterhouse is discharging the waste, blood in the nullah which flows near our society. The water quality has definitely gone down. Also, it is mandatory for the slaughterhouse to have its own waste discharge system. For years we have been complaining but they have paid no heed to our complaints.”

Shinde said that a couple of days ago we approached the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board seeking their intervention in the issue.

When Pune Pulse contacted the official from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, the official assured for a site visit to understand the grievance and proceed for further action.

The nullah which comes from Lulla Nagar side then joins further to Bhairoba nullah near Reliance mall on Salunke Vihar road which is a fresh water source but has now become heavily contaminated. Early action on curbing any waste discharge in the water will ensure that the water remains clean and safe.
