Pune: New Sinhagad Road Flyover Faces Heavy Traffic Just Days After Inauguration
Pune: Barely a week after its grand inauguration, the newly opened Sinhagad Road flyover is already witnessing severe traffic congestion, raising concerns over its effectiveness in easing daily commutes. A video circulating on Monday showed vehicles crawling on the stretch during peak hours, leaving commuters frustrated.
The flyover, touted as Pune’s longest, was inaugurated on September 1 by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Built at a cost of ₹118 crore, the 2.5 km project consists of multiple arms: a 520-metre one-way flyover from Vitthalwadi to Veer Baji Pasalkar Udyan, a 2.1 km stretch from Vitthalwadi to Funtime Cinema, and a 1.5 km arm connecting Goel Ganga Chowk to Hingane.
While some sections were opened earlier this year by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the final link was completed and formally opened last week.
Despite assurances that the flyover would reduce congestion, the traffic chaos continues. Sinhagad Road serves as the main lifeline for thousands of residents from Khadakwasla, Dhayari, Vadgaon Budruk, Hingne, Narhe, and surrounding areas. It also connects to tourist destinations such as Panshet, Varasgaon, Khadakwasla dams, and Sinhagad Fort, besides linking to key national institutes and the Bengaluru-Mumbai bypass.
The persistent jams have left citizens questioning whether the flyover, meant to be a solution, has instead become another bottleneck on one of Pune’s busiest stretches.
