Pimpri Chinchwad, July 10: Rescue teams continued their intensive search operation for the second consecutive day after a massive garbage mound collapsed onto a three-storey administrative building at the Moshi Garbage Depot, leaving eight workers still trapped more than 40 hours after the accident.

The incident occurred at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday at the Waste-to-Energy project within the Moshi Garbage Depot, when thousands of tonnes of garbage suddenly slid onto the three-storey administrative building. Unable to withstand the enormous pressure, the structure collapsed completely.

Five workers managed to escape by jumping out of the building moments before it collapsed. However, several others remained trapped beneath the debris and garbage.

So far, one worker, identified as Bhavesh Wani, has been confirmed dead after rescue teams recovered his body from beneath the collapsed structure. Several injured workers have also been rescued and shifted to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital for treatment.

According to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi, eight workers remain trapped beneath the debris. Rescue personnel have been able to identify the probable locations of two of them, but there has been no response from any of the trapped workers, raising concerns about their survival as time continues to pass.

The workers still believed to be trapped have been identified as Mahesh Kumbhar, Sunny Mane, Rahul Gaikwad, Sunil Korke, Akshay Sawant, Ranjit Patil, Nagesh Gaikwad, and Vaman Kasbe.

A massive rescue operation involving the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Fire Department, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Indian Army has been underway continuously since the incident. Heavy machinery is being used to remove the enormous volume of garbage while rescue teams carefully search for survivors without causing further collapse.

Authorities said the search operation will continue until all the trapped workers are located.
