Over 350 flats in Balewadi area are struggling to breathe fresh air since 26 September 2023, as various societies in the area such as Sanskruti Homes and Sai Silicon Valley, and adjoining societies are getting flooded with drainage water in their premises.

This dirty water has entered their clubhouse, garden, play area and even the internal roads. The foul smell of the drainage is unbearable which has become a big threat as it has now become a breeding spot for mosquitoes. Common toilet area, compost area, garbage shed areas are inaccessible.

A resident of the society complained, “Today, the main borewell at Sanskruti Homes has stopped working thereby creating shortage of Utility Water supply. It cannot even be repaired due to flooding in that area. Residents are scared that this drainage overflow will soon reach their parking, lifts, and underground tanks. Corporation, Smart City officials have visited the site and surveyed the entire area. The drainage line behind and in parallel to these societies is also full. There is no design/layout of the chambers which is aggravating the problem. Since the 2 societies Sanskruti Homes and Sai Silicon Valley are at low level, all the drainage water is flowing back here. A new pipeline is urgently needed to be set up.”

When Pune Pulse spoke to an official from PMC who shared that there was a nala which has been closed. There is no drainage line. There are no traces of the drainage line further too.

Another resident complained that the PMC officials themselves couldnt locate the root cause of the problem. When they came to inspect the area, they didn’t know where exactly the lines were laid and where they connected also. They do not have the drawings of the drainage layout of the entire area which would have made the issue simpler to resolve. Now, they have assured me that they will come on Monday, October 2. Our drinking water has become contaminated and we are forced to buy water bottles from nearby shops. Our amenities are out of our access as water has accumulated till our play area, clubhouse, etc.
