Pune- The MIDC had recently cleared a proposal for a dedicated waste management depot at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi and issued work orders. According to MIDC officials, the plant would be set up inside the IT park to process approximately 10 tonnes of generated waste. The IT Park hosted over 150 companies, including multiple MNCs, and over four lakh people were employed there.

According to officials, a plot in phase 3 has been identified for the plant. A letter seeking the allocation of land has been forwarded to the MIDC headquarters. The construction activity will commence once the allocation process is finalized. The estimated period of project completion is around one year.

Industries had been raising the issue of illegal dumping of garbage in the IT park by villagers residing nearby. Multiple meetings were held by the MIDC officials and members of the Hinjewadi Industries Association (HIA) with the district administration regarding this issue over the last few years. However, this problem remained unsettled. Though Hinjewadi comes under Gram Panchayat, MIDC was responsible for the management of infrastructure.

Currently, three different private agencies are assigned the task of collecting waste from the IT park area through contracts with MIDC. They collect waste and hand it over to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for processing. The new waste management depot is expected to address the longstanding issue of illegal dumping and ensure a cleaner environment inside the IT hub.
