Pune: The complete journey of eradication of the superstitious Jat Pratha is showcased at the exhibition ‘Jat Pratha Nirmulan Pradarshan’ at Balgandharva Art Gallery. The exhibition is organized by Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti to mark the death anniversary of Dr Narendra Dabholkar which will observe its 10th year on August 20.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Nandini Jadhav, Member of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti said, “The notion of tresses (Jat) only found on the hair of illiterate women is a hoax. Even literate women develop tresses & keep them as it is. There are several superstitions regarding tresses. Several people from all walks of life believe that tresses are related to God & if they are cut, the husband or child of a woman can die or any other problems can occur.”

“It is a sheer superstition. We all know that if the hair is not properly maintained, several unnecessary curls develop & entire hair gets locked in those curls, leading to the creation of tresses. The tragic death of Dr Narendra Dabholkar will complete 10 years on 20th August. Hence, as a tribute to him & also for everybody’s awareness, enlightenment & eradication of this superstition, we have organized the Jat Pratha Nirmulan Pradarshan,” she further added.

As per information, 276 women so far from 19 districts of Maharashtra, right from age 6 to age 55, have been made free from tresses by the organization.

Mukta Dabholkar, Core Member of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti & Daughter of Dr Narendra Dabholkar, said, “Jat Nirmulan is one part of this. Apart from that, Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti has been constantly trying hard to eradicate all kinds of superstitions since 33 years; superstitions like Bhanamati, Angaat Yena, Shoshan, Babaji, Jadu Tona and much more. The death of Dr Narendra Dabholkar will complete 10 years on August 20. Even after his death, the samiti is working day in & day out for all kinds of Andhashraddha Nirmulan. There will be 2 programs held on August 19 and 20 from 5 pm to 7 pm near Sane Guruji Smarak to commemorate & pay tribute to Dr Narendra Dabholkar. We encourage everyone to come to both of these programs in large numbers.”

Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan has encouraged everybody to come to this Jat Pratha Exhibition in huge numbers. It is open till 8 pm on August 17 at Balgandharva Art Gallery.
