Pune News: Lokmanya Nagar Residents Send 500+ Postcards To CM Fadnavis, Demand Immediate Lifting Of Redevelopment Stay
Pune, November 19, 2025: Residents of Lokmanya Nagar have intensified their appeal for the resumption of redevelopment work by sending over 500 postcards to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to revoke the stay imposed on the project.
A total of 525 residents participated in the postcard campaign, which was coordinated by Adv. Ganesh Satpute. Postcards collected from locals at Lokmanya Nagar were forwarded to Mantralaya, conveying their frustration over the halt on redevelopment of 57 ageing buildings.
As per Section 79A, 803 families residing in 57 buildings had grouped themselves in clusters of two to four structures and appointed developers. Demolition work was set to begin when a letter submitted by MLA Hemant Rasane prompted the Chief Minister to temporarily suspend the project. Residents argue that the decision has crushed their long-awaited hopes for safer homes and has caused widespread unrest in the locality.
The buildings in question, constructed more than six decades ago using load-bearing techniques, have been declared unsafe by structural engineers. According to the residents’ committee, over 800 families continue to live in hazardous conditions due to the stalled redevelopment.
The Lokmanya Nagar Bachav Kruti Samiti, formed to push for the withdrawal of the stay order, has been staging protests and pursuing various democratic measures since August. Their efforts include meeting the Deputy Chief Minister and MHADA officials, conducting a signature campaign, and sending numerous emails to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Recently, committee members met Pravin Darekar, Chairman of the Maharashtra Redevelopment Corporation, following which a meeting was arranged with MHADA Vice President Sanjeev Jaiswal. Jaiswal suggested forming a mini-cluster of six buildings. However, committee members explained that many societies had already reached advanced redevelopment stages, making the proposal unworkable. The discussion ended on a positive note, the committee reported.
The committee has stated that if the stay order is not revoked soon, they will be left with no choice but to pursue legal action.
