Pune News: Mosquito Menace In Phursungi, Shewalewadi As Untreated Sewage From Mundhwa Jackwell Pollutes Canal, Allege ResidentsÂ
Pune, February 17, 2025: The release of untreated sewage from Mundhwa Jackwell into the old canal by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has caused severe mosquito infestation and foul odors in areas such as Sadesatranali, Manjari, Vitthalnagar, Laxmi Colony, Shewalewadi, and Phursungi. The contaminated water has led to an increase in diseases like dengue and malaria, raising concerns of further complications such as Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).
Residents have complained that the polluted water from the canal has also affected local water sources. Despite submitting a formal request to PMC Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, health officials from the Hadapsar regional office have allegedly ignored the issue.
According to Rahul Ramchandra Shewale, General Secretary of BJP Pune District, several residents, including women, children, and elderly citizens, have contracted dengue and malaria, with many receiving treatment at local hospitals. Students are also severely affected by the outbreak.
The worst-hit areas include Kodre Nagar, Shivchaitanya Colony, and Kamthevasti. Shewale has urged PMC to take immediate action, including chemical spraying and fumigation, to control mosquito breeding and safeguard public health.
