Tensions are rising within the Mahayuti alliance as Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) workers strongly oppose the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) decision to field Shankar Jagtap as its candidate for Chinchwad in the upcoming 2024 assembly elections. During an emergency meeting on Sunday, NCP leaders, including Vitthal Kate, Prashant Shitole, and Mayur Kalate, demanded that their party be given the opportunity to contest the seat.

NCP workers have voiced dissatisfaction, refusing to campaign for Jagtap. They argue that the NCP, with its deep local roots and history of development projects in the constituency, should be the chosen party. Kate emphasized the need to end “political nepotism” and stressed that a local NCP candidate would have stronger support from the electorate.

Despite BJP state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule’s efforts to ensure unity by persuading Jagtap’s sister-in-law Ashwini to step aside for him, the opposition within both the NCP and BJP poses a significant challenge to Jagtap’s candidacy.

Chinchwad has long been a Jagtap family stronghold, with the late Laxman Jagtap holding the seat for three consecutive terms until his death in 2023. However, internal divisions threaten to weaken the Mahayuti alliance’s bid to retain control over this key constituency.
