Pune: Recently, the State Election Commission has released a notification regarding the voter list (cut-off date) for local self-government elections on July 5, 2023.  No election program has actually been announced in it. Apart from the Gram Panchayat elections, the Supreme Court has given ‘status quo’ orders regarding the elections of all other local bodies. Therefore, the question of announcing the election program does not arise, explained State Election Commissioner UPS Madan.

Madan said that separate voter lists are not prepared for local self-government elections. For that, the voter lists of the assembly constituencies are taken as they are and divided ward-wise only. A specific date (cut-off date) is fixed for the use of assembly constituency lists for all upcoming general and by-elections of local bodies. On the same lines, a notification has been published on July 5, 2023 to fix the cut-off date of July 1, 2023 for the upcoming general and by-elections of local bodies.

The cut-off date is fixed from time to time for using the updated voter lists of the assembly constituencies for the elections to the local bodies and the notification in this regard is also published. Notifications of this nature have also been published earlier. This notification is not an actual election programme. If the general or by-elections are not held within the period mentioned in the notification, a notification is issued to fix the cut-off date again, said Madan.
