An 82-year-old retired man living in Bavdhan lost Rs 39.8 lakh in a piped gas bill scam in July. He reported the incident to the cybercrime branch of the Pimpri Chinchwad police, and after an initial investigation, a case was filed with the Hinjewadi police under the appropriate sections of the law on Tuesday.

Assistant Inspector Somnath Panchal from the Hinjewadi police stated that the victim received a call from an unknown number on July 23. The caller claimed to be an official from Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) and informed the victim that his piped gas bill for June was overdue. When the victim mentioned that he had already paid the bill, the caller instructed him to update it.

The scammer then sent a link for the update. After the victim clicked the link, a remote access application was installed, allowing the fraudster to access his phone and bank account, from which Rs 22.2 lakh was stolen.

Additionally, the victim had a fixed deposit of Rs 21 lakh in the bank, and the scammers managed to secure a loan of Rs 17 lakh against that fixed deposit.
