Pune: In order to tackle Pune’s increasing water demand as a result of increased urbanization, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has shifted its focus on groundwater and increasing the groundwater levels.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Mangesh Dighe, Environmental Conservation Officer, PMC said, “With the rapid increase in urbanization, the need and supply of appropriate and abundant groundwater is also rising. The civic body has realized the need for increased groundwater supply in the city. Hence, PMC will carry out a survey of all areas of Pune regarding the current groundwater situation. A meeting will then be organized with the officials of the PMC regarding ways to increase the capacity of groundwater in the city, how much it should be increased and so on. Along with a panel of experts, the PMC will finalize the required groundwater levels for the city. It will also focus on identifying groundwater reserves in Pune, protecting the source and reserves of groundwater, information collection of the release of a quantity of groundwater from borewells and preventing groundwater pollution.”

As per information, given the city’s growing population and area, PMC recently requested that the state government distribute 20.9 TMC water from dams to it. The state water resources department, on the other hand, has objected to the demand, claiming the necessity to divert water from the dam for agricultural and industrial purposes.
