World Book Day is annually celebrated across the globe on April 25 ever since UNESCO launched the initiative in 1995. Books are a cultural push towards critical thinking and inclusivity- books encourage us to put ourselves in the shoes of others and experience what we never lived.

To honour this very beauty of reading, Pune Writers’ Group and Nukkad Cafe of Viman Nagar have banded together to celebrate World Book Day across the whole city of Pune. They have brought in collaborations from six other notable book cafes of the city- Pagdandi, Waari, Marshall’s, Kitabi Chai, Rainbow Fizz and Mauji Spaces to present perhaps one of the biggest bookish events in the city. The audiobook company Storytel has also partnered up to be a part of this wonderful event.

This free-of-charge event is set to be held across all seven spots, leaving no corner of the city unturned. On Sunday, 23rd April these seven cafes will conduct ten events with thirteen speakers- making it the perfect opportunity for all bookworms to interact with writers, editors and publishers of every genre and space. The event will not only hold talks and discussions but will also encourage attendees to participate in workshops.

Pune Writers’ Group is an independent community of writers who have been socially engaging with the craft of writing since 2014. They hold regular online meetups as well as connect at Pagdandi in Baner every other week and are welcome to writers of all backgrounds and experiences. Nukkad Cafe, based in Viman Nagar has been active in the sphere of art in all forms ever since its establishment in 2015. A sanctuary for writers, poets and artists alike, the cafe holds regular events around poetry, craftsmanship and literature.

Vaibhav Paliwal, owner of Nukkad Cafe says, “A book is a balance of people’s experience, wisdom, and imagination. And when this balance comes to us as a book, it adds immense value to our lives. Celebrating World Book Day is about thanking that books exist in this world & our lives and appreciating the efforts of every player in the ecosystem of books, authors, publishers etc to continue to keep adding value to our lives. This is probably the first time in the city of Pune that many book cafes and writers’ groups come together to celebrate World Book Day. Authors, publication houses, narrators and book cafes have together so that people at large can meet them and the ecosystem of the book grows stronger. 10 events at 7 cafes, with 13 speakers, are free for everyone to attend. I hope that people can attend a maximum number of events and get the most out of it.”
