Pimpri: With rapid urbanization and increasing construction projects, air pollution in Pimpri-Chinchwad has worsened, causing distress to residents and commuters.

The rising dust levels have led to a surge in respiratory illnesses, prompting MLA Mahesh Landge to urge Environment Minister Pankaja Munde to take immediate action.

Residents of housing societies in Pimpri-Chinchwad staged a silent protest to draw the state government’s attention to the deteriorating air quality. The presence of cement dust in the air and pollution caused by heavy vehicles has significantly lowered air quality, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Reports indicate a rise in asthma, allergies, and other respiratory disorders due to poor air quality. Residents have also expressed concerns over dust settling on roads, vehicles, and homes, affecting their quality of life.

MLA Demands Urgent Action

MLA Mahesh Landge has called for an urgent meeting to address the issue, demanding stricter pollution control measures. He has urged authorities to:

  • Immediately halt the release of cement dust into the air.
  • Enforce stricter regulations to control rising pollution levels.
  • Conduct regular air quality checks and make the reports public.
  • Ensure roads are cleaned twice a day to reduce dust accumulation.
  • Impose strict penalties on vehicles violating pollution norms.
  • Use water tankers and air guns to spray water on roads to control dust levels.
  • Provide necessary healthcare services to those affected by pollution.
  • Maintain and regularly water roadside trees to improve air quality.

Air Quality Index (AQI) Data for Pimpri-Chinchwad (March 12, 2025):

  • Gavlinagar: 127
  • Park Street, Wakad: 140
  • Thergaon: 127
  • Bhosari: 260
  • Bhumkar Nagar: 265
  • Transport Nagar, Nigdi: 140

An AQI of 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 moderate, and 101-200 harmful to health. Levels above 200 indicate severe pollution that can cause significant health risks.

Given the alarming situation, MLA Landge has urged the government to hold a high-level meeting with environmental officials and local representatives to implement stricter measures. He expressed confidence that the ruling government and the environment department will take necessary steps to address the crisis.
