As summer temperatures soar, both domestic consumers and beverage vendors are witnessing a surge in lemon demand, resulting in a noticeable rise in prices across both wholesale and retail markets. According to a prominent lemon trader at Market Yard, the Gultekdi market has experienced a significant price hike over the past ten days due to a supply shortage amid escalating demand.

Retail outlets are currently selling individual lemons for approximately Rs. 3 to Rs. 5. Meanwhile, market yard operations report a daily arrival of between 800 and 1,000 lemons. This increased demand is largely driven by the need for fresh lemons, essential for preparing traditional summer beverages such as sharbat, which are popular among residents looking to beat the heat.

The primary supply of lemons originates from key cultivation areas in Shrigonda, Ahmednagar district, and the Barshi region in Solapur district. Wholesale crates, typically containing around 300 to 350 lemons, have seen prices rise from Rs. 400–700 last week to a current range of Rs. 400–1,000 per crate.

This price surge underscores the seasonal impact on produce markets, as the summer heat not only boosts consumer demand but also strains supply chains. Consumers and vendors alike are advised to prepare for continued volatility in lemon prices throughout the hot season.
