In a significant turn of events, the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) has overturned the suspension of three officials implicated in the theft of a voting machine (control unit) from the Tehsildar office in Saswad, Purandar taluka. The suspended officials include Purandar Provincial Officer Varsha Landge, Tehsildar Vikram Rajput, and Sub Divisional Police Officer (DYSP) Tanaji Barde.

The incident, which occurred on February 5, saw the theft of the EVM unit from the secure storage facility within the tehsildar office premises. Pune Rural police swiftly arrested two suspects in connection with the theft and recovered the stolen EVM. However, the motive behind the theft remains under investigation.

Initial findings revealed that the theft took place on the night of February 3, with security camera footage capturing three suspects at the scene. While two suspects have been apprehended, authorities continue to search for possible accomplices.

Following the incident, the Election Commission of India ordered the suspension of the implicated officials, citing alleged dereliction of duty. However, the MAT’s decision to overturn the suspension orders has caused a stir. The tribunal’s ruling reinstates the suspended officials to their former positions, citing insufficient evidence or procedural irregularities in their suspension.

The MAT’s decision marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the EVM theft case. As authorities delve deeper into the matter to uncover the motives and potential accomplices, the reinstatement of the suspended officials raises questions about accountability and due process in handling such sensitive cases.

While the recovery of the stolen EVM provides some relief, the incident underscores the importance of robust security measures and vigilant oversight in safeguarding electoral infrastructure. As the investigation progresses, stakeholders remain vigilant to ensure the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.
