PUNE: A 19-year-old engineering student from a Pune-based college was remanded to five days of police custody by a holiday court on Saturday after being arrested for allegedly sharing pro-Pakistan content on social media.

The accused, identified as Khadija Shaikh, a second-year IT student, was arrested on Friday under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 152 (acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India), Section 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), Section 299 (outraging religious feelings), and Section 352 (intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace).

Following her arrest, the college management rusticated her with immediate effect.

Police informed the court that they required additional time to probe the source of the controversial post, determine whether Shaikh was in contact with the original creator, and examine her electronic devices.

Inspector Vinayak Patankar of the Kondhwa Police Station stated, “The shared Instagram status originated from an account named Dr MAARIB@reformistan, and Khadija had reposted it. We are investigating her digital trail to assess intent and connections.”

The arrest followed a complaint by a Hindu right-wing group alleging that Shaikh had posted content including the slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” on her Instagram profile.
