Pune News: Vishrambaug Police Crack Down On Gold Chain Robbery Gang
24 August 2024
The Vishrambaug police announced that they have solved two of the four recent street robberies involving the theft of gold chains from victims following disputes over minor issues. A police team, led by senior inspector Vijaymala Pawar, apprehended three men and detained a minor accomplice in connection with these crimes. They recovered two gold chains and two scooters from the suspects. One incident involved a 20-year-old student who had his gold chain, valued at Rs 60,000, stolen after the gang stopped his bike in front of Sundarbai Rathi School on Laxmi Road on August 12. Prior to that, they had stolen a techie’s gold chain worth Rs 2 lakh in Karvenagar on August 7 using a similar approach. The suspects—Kasim Ansari (22) and Aniket Fasge (22) from Ganj Peth, Ashraf Sayyad (20) from Hadapsar, along with their minor accomplice—were arrested at Kranti Chowk in Budhwar Peth recently.
Sub-inspector Manoj Barure from the Vishrambaug police stated that Ansari had a case of bodily offense against him, while the others did not have any prior criminal records. “They met through a mutual friend. All of them are unemployed. The minor suspect suggested the idea of targeting lone two-wheeler drivers, provoking a quarrel over a trivial issue, and snatching their gold chains,” Barure explained.
He added that during questioning, the suspects admitted to having targeted five more two-wheeler drivers over the course of nearly a month. “In some instances, they had to flee when passersby intervened. On a few occasions, they found nothing of value on their victims. We checked with all police stations, but none of these victims reported the incidents,” Barure mentioned.
Additionally, he indicated that the police questioned the gang about recent robberies in Shivajinagar and Bavdhan, expressing suspicion that other robbers might be involved in those cases.
