Pune: Old Modikhana Residents Seek Urgent Action as Drainage Overflows Continue, Health Risks Mount in Camp Area
Pune | February 23, 2026:
Residents of Old Modikhana in the Camp area have once again raised serious concerns over a long-standing and recurring drainage overflow problem, accusing authorities of inaction despite repeated complaints and official site visits.
The affected locality, comprising houses numbered 1087, 1086, 1088, 1085, 1090 and surrounding residences, falls under the jurisdiction of the Pune Cantonment Board. Residents allege that for over two years, the underground drainage system behind their homes has remained structurally damaged and permanently choked, leading to frequent sewage overflows.
According to the complaints, contaminated drainage water enters homes through wash basins and toilets at least once every week. The situation has worsened with sewage seepage contaminating borewell water, which is used for daily household needs. Locals warn that this has created a serious public health risk, especially for children and elderly residents.
Despite earlier inspections by officials and assurances of corrective action, residents claim that only temporary cleaning measures have been carried out by maintenance teams. These short-term fixes, they say, fail to address the root cause — a damaged underground drainage pipeline that requires structural repair or complete replacement.
“The problem returns within days of cleaning. The stench, sewage overflow, and water contamination have made living conditions unbearable,” residents stated in their representation.
The residents have now demanded immediate permanent action, including a comprehensive inspection of the drainage line, replacement or major repair of the outdated underground pipeline, and complete protection of borewell water lines from sewage contamination.
Locals have also warned that if urgent steps are not taken, the matter will be escalated to higher administrative and public health authorities, citing the growing risk of waterborne diseases and unsafe living conditions in Old Modikhana.
Residents are calling for direct intervention from senior officials and a clear timeline for permanent rectification, stating that further delays could turn the locality into a major sanitation and public health crisis.
