Pune: Many Punekars have objected to the trees getting cut on the road from Koregaon Park to Kalyani Nagar.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Rajeev Pathria, a resident of Viman Nagar, said, “When you go from Koregaon Park & take a turn towards Kalyani Nagar, you will find many trees having the notice on them from PMC of getting cut. There can be 15 to 20 trees which are in danger and these are very old trees. Trees are the lifeline of a place. In the name of doing construction work etc, several trees have already been cut in Pune & now, more are going to be cut.”

Aruna Suratkal, a resident of Kalyani Nagar said, “Many trees at Koregaon Park have a notice on them that they are going to get cut. It is because of the bridge which will be constructed between Koregaon Park and Kalyani Nagar over the river. The trees have been marked on both sides of this particular road. Already due to the riverfront project of the PMC, several trees have been felled without any concern and now this. These trees are 50 to 60 years old. Even if new trees are planted, it would take a lot of time for them to grow.”

Vilas Atole, Horticulture Mistry, PMC Tree Department said, “Around 80 trees are going to be cut for road widening and for the proposed bridge. The traffic flow in the area has increased a lot, leading to traffic congestion. Hence, to smoothen the traffic flow, these trees are going to be cut and official notices have been put up on the trees.”
