Pune: Residents of Salunke Vihar Road in Kondhwa were once again troubled as drainage chambers near Café Farmhouse began overflowing with slaughterhouse waste on Wednesday afternoon. The issue, which has been a recurring problem, sparked immediate complaints to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Just a month ago, Pune Pulse had reported how homes in the area were flooded with blood, fat, and other waste materials due to unprocessed slaughterhouse discharge entering the drainage system. Following the outcry, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had taken strict action, issuing a show cause notice to the concerned authorities.

Social activist Rohan Gaikwad informed Pune Pulse that similar waste discharge was spotted again, raising concerns about public hygiene and environmental safety. Acting promptly, the PMC was alerted, and officials quickly initiated remedial measures.

Dr. Sarika Funde, head of PMC’s veterinary department, stated that the civic body is in the process of replacing old drainage pipes with new ones to prevent such incidents in the future. She also mentioned that repairs are underway at the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to ensure proper waste processing. The replacement of drainage infrastructure has been included in this year’s budget and will be taken up soon, she added.

The recurring issue has left residents frustrated, demanding a permanent solution. They have urged authorities to expedite the repair work and implement stringent monitoring of waste disposal from slaughterhouses to prevent further contamination of the drainage system.
