Pune: PCMC Intensifies Cleanliness Efforts During Diwali; Collects Over 5,600 Tonnes Of Waste In Four Days
Pimpri, October 27, 2025: To ensure a clean and pleasant festive environment, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) undertook a special waste collection and cleanliness drive during Diwali. Between October 20 and 23, the Health Department collected an impressive 5,658 tonnes of waste from across the city.
Recognizing that household cleaning, festive decorations, market rush, and firecracker residue significantly increase waste generation during Diwali, PCMC implemented an extensive citywide cleanliness plan. The drive was conducted under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shravan Hardikar, Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate, and led by Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar.
Across 32 wards under eight zonal offices, sanitation workers, waste collection vehicles, and compactor trucks operated round the clock. On average, over 1,400 tonnes of waste were collected daily. Special care was taken to segregate firecracker remains for safe disposal, while awareness was raised among citizens on separating wet and dry waste at source.
To manage the surge in household waste, the number of door-to-door collection vehicles was increased. Citizens were also encouraged to deposit usable yet unwanted household items at the municipal RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) centers, a message that received enthusiastic public response.
Continuing Cleanliness Beyond the Festival
The Health Department has now launched a special weekly cleanliness drive to sustain the momentum beyond Diwali. The initiative focuses on cleaning public spaces, temple premises, marketplaces, and areas where firecrackers were sold or used. Citizens have been urged to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness in their localities.
“Considering the increased waste generation during Diwali, the Health Department had prepared a detailed plan and executed it efficiently. The coordination across zonal offices, swift transport arrangements, and the dedication of sanitation staff ensured success. Citizens’ growing awareness towards cleanliness is a very encouraging sign for the Corporation.”
