Pune People suffer as administration lack rain preparedness yet again
Pune: Seven people were killed as heavy rains continue to lash Pune. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for more rains till July 27. As the city braces for more rains, the lack of proper management by the authorities has once again come to the fore. Seven people were killed in this heavy rain.
The city experienced on Thursday how the administration is not capable and how the residents suffer. As heavy rains lashed the city, the weather department’s incomprehensible warnings, and lack of coordination regarding the release of water from the dam, made the common residents suffer. However, the current flood-like situation is blamed on development projects that are being constructed sidelining the environmental impact it will create. The water release from the Khadakwasla dam was increased on Wednesday afternoon itself, which increased further at midnight due to strong winds. Residents of riverside housing societies, who had woken up to the sound of rain, began to panic at around 3 am when water began to seep into the parking lot of some, and the houses on the ground floors of others.
The rain lashed the city on Wednesday evening and will continue for a few more days. The heavy rains late in the night were enough to raise suspicion among People of Puner about the inevitable.
Information about water entering the houses and settlements and residents getting trapped started coming to the fire brigade. Reports of falling trees were coming continuously from all over the city. As there was an orange warning from the meteorological department, so much rain was not expected, but after seeing its heavy form, an order was issued to close the schools soon in the morning. Some parents, some school vans, and rickshaws had brought the children to school early in the morning. They had to return home. There were incidents of trees falling and branches falling at nearly 80 places. Walls of houses collapsed and big branches fell on cars.
Several areas also witnessed power outages. Due to the rains, many people who were given the option of working from home suffered without electricity. Along with the city, the rain also ravaged the rural areas of the district. There were incidents like landslides, due to which ghat roads were closed. People living in distant places lost contact.
Along with the fire brigade, police administration, disaster relief team, municipal administration staff, and political parties, Ganesh Mandal activists came running to help. Guardian Minister, Police Commissioner, and District Administration took care to provide help wherever it was needed.
The city of Pune experienced on Thursday how the systems are not capable and the existing ones are broken, and how the city dwellers are suffering and the whole city is waiting.
