Pune: PMC Announces Plan To Upgrade Balgandharva Auditorium
Pune, March 12, 2026: The Balgandharva Auditorium redevelopment proposal has resurfaced, with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) announcing fresh plans to renovate and modernise the iconic cultural venue as part of its latest annual budget.
While presenting the civic body’s budget, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the auditorium, constructed in 1968, now requires significant upgrades to meet present-day standards. Though the structure holds cultural and historical value, several of its facilities have become outdated over time.
According to the proposed plan, the redeveloped complex will feature three auditoriums, each expected to accommodate around 1,800 spectators. The project also aims to introduce improved infrastructure for performers, including modern make-up and changing rooms, better backstage arrangements, and upgraded sanitation facilities.
Officials say the centrally located venue has the potential to host more cultural events once it is modernised. The redevelopment is expected to enhance the usability of the complex while equipping it with contemporary amenities.
The proposal had earlier sparked strong opposition from members of Pune’s cultural community and residents, who raised concerns about possible alterations to the heritage character of the auditorium. Due to these objections, the project was put on hold for several months.

In recent weeks, discussions around reviving the redevelopment have gained momentum. A review meeting chaired by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol with civic officials also included deliberations on the future of the auditorium.
Authorities have indicated that the concerns of artists, citizens and other stakeholders will be taken into account before moving ahead with the project. The renewed push by the PMC is likely to reignite debate over the future of one of Pune’s most prominent cultural landmarks.
