Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported filling 8,472 potholes between March 1 and August 1, according to their latest data. Despite this claim, many roads in Pune remain plagued with craters. PMC’s data reveals that a total of 8,525 potholes were identified, with only 53 still awaiting repair. The civic body has conducted tarring on approximately 10,228 square meters of road and used over 20,400 tonnes of repair materials, including cold and hot mix.

Critics argue that the repair efforts are merely cosmetic and lack durability, as roads continue to deteriorate after minor rainfall. During the 2023 monsoon season, PMC had previously repaired over 7,000 potholes and used around 20,000 metric tonnes of tar macadam mixture and 4,000 metric tonnes of cement mixture.

To address ongoing issues, the PMC has advanced its deadline for road digging and restoration. The new completion date is set for April 30, a month earlier than the previous deadline of May 31. Road repairs are often complicated by work from telecom, electricity, and gas companies, which dig up roads for cables and pipes. A total of 26 firms were involved in such activities.

PMC charges approximately ₹12,000 per running meter for road repairs. Contractors are required to restore roads to their original condition or face penalties.
