Pune, May 13, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is in the final stages of preparing a comprehensive policy to address the growing problem of overhead cables across the city. The proposed framework aims to provide a long-term solution to hanging cables that have led to visual clutter and safety concerns on city roads.

PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the civic administration has already drafted a dedicated policy and is currently studying its possible impact before giving it final approval. Discussions are also underway with MahaPreit regarding various aspects of the proposed plan.

The Road Department had earlier submitted the draft policy to the commissioner, following which certain modifications were suggested. Civic officials noted that loosely hanging overhead cables not only spoil the city’s appearance but also pose a risk of accidents and disruptions.

Over the past few months, the PMC has been carrying out drives against unauthorised cable installations across Pune. However, the action faced opposition from cable TV and broadband operators’ associations, which demanded a clear set of rules and a formal policy before any enforcement action was taken.

The associations had also urged the civic body to issue prior notices and involve stakeholders in the implementation process. Following these demands, the PMC decided to formulate a separate and structured policy for overhead cable management.

According to civic officials, the administration has directed departments to examine the financial, technical and administrative impact of the proposed policy before taking a final decision. Commissioner Ram stated that the move is important for strengthening the city’s infrastructure and ensuring better urban management without causing financial losses to the corporation.

Officials believe that if implemented effectively, the policy could significantly reduce visual pollution and improve the overall appearance and safety of Pune’s roads and public spaces.
