Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in collaboration with city-based NGOs has sterilized nearly 3,000 stray cats in a year in an attempt to reduce the number of stray cats in the city.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dr Sarita Funde, PMC veterinary superintendent said, “We have been conducting a drive to sterilise cats in the city, which is becoming a task as cats are difficult to catch.”

As per information & data shared by Dr Sarita Funde, PMC Veterinary Superintendent, 2,966 stray cats have been neutered from September 2022 to August 2023.

It is worthy to note that PMC is the second municipal body in Maharashtra, after Mumbai, to implement a cat population control program.

As the number of pet owners in the city increases, so does the number of stray dogs and cats. With most of the cats having 4-5 kittens, the cat population is increasing, and this is leading to several issues. Most of the civic bodies across the country have already started cat sterilization programs and the PMC is doing the same.
