Pune Police Commissioner Directs Traffic Department To Strengthen Monsoon Preparedness And Road Discipline
Pune, May 15 — With the monsoon season approaching, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has directed the Pune traffic police to remain vigilant and coordinate closely with civic authorities to prevent traffic disruptions and accidents. Emphasizing proactive planning, Kumar urged officers to identify past waterlogging and tree-fall zones and prepare equipment like pumps, tree cutters, and earth movers to tackle emergencies effectively.
The directive was issued during a function in Wanowrie on Wednesday, where Kumar addressed traffic personnel who had recently completed specialized training in traffic management, soft skills, CPR, VIP movement management, and other modules. Over 1,100 traffic constables participated in this training initiative, designed to enhance public interaction and operational efficiency.
Senior officials, including Joint Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Additional CP Manoj Patil, and DCP (Traffic) Amol Zende, were also present at the event.
Kumar stressed the importance of police presence at major junctions and roads, advising personnel to avoid hiding behind objects to catch violators. He called for a more transparent and respectful approach in dealing with the public, underlining that the traffic branch is the face of the police force and reflects the city’s image.
He also instructed officers to take strict action against reckless heavy vehicle drivers and habitual offenders, advising them not to back down in the face of aggression and to assert the authority of the law professionally. Emphasizing dignity in duty, he advised officers to avoid confrontations and focus on assertive yet respectful enforcement.
As part of monsoon preparations, traffic divisions have been told to work with the Pune Municipal Corporation to analyze trouble-prone areas from the previous rainy season and deploy response equipment accordingly. Kumar also highlighted the need for traffic staff to give priority to ambulances during VIP movement operations and avoid excessive use of whistles that could confuse other drivers.
Joint CP Sharma noted that a significant number of public complaints relate to the conduct of police personnel, and stressed the importance of courteous and professional behavior, especially in a city like Pune that sees a large influx of people from different regions.
The event also encouraged officers to pursue online training modules to stay updated with evolving traffic management strategies, reinforcing the department’s commitment to continuous learning and service improvement.
