Pune Police Crack Down On Gang Of Autorickshaw Drivers Robbing Passengers At NightÂ
Pune police have dismantled a gang of autorickshaw drivers who targeted and robbed passengers during late hours. The gang would use fake registration plates to avoid detection while preying on vulnerable individuals, especially those unfamiliar with the city or under the influence.
The investigation began when a Pune-based worker from Telangana was robbed by an autorickshaw driver after hiring a ride from Katraj Bibwewadi bus stand. The driver, under the pretense of making a call, stopped near Gangadham, where he and his accomplices threatened the victim and stole his cell phone, silver chain, and cash.
Through extensive efforts, including reviewing footage from 150 CCTV cameras and analyzing cell phone data, the police apprehended key suspects Rohit Chavan (23), Mayur Chavan (19), and Sudarshan Kamble (22). The suspects frequently changed the rickshawâs number plates to evade capture. A search is ongoing for a fourth accomplice.
The gang often targeted elderly passengers, newcomers to Pune, or those intoxicated, robbing and assaulting them before abandoning them in isolated areas. The police have since recovered the victim’s stolen belongings.
