Pune : Power of Unity’: Save Vetal Tekdi Panel Leads Movement to Preserve Vetal Hill

Pune: Save Vetal Tekdi Panel has started a ‘Power of Unity’ movement to oppose the construction of a road from Vetal Tekdi for the proposed Balbharati – Paud Phata Link Road by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
As per the information, the proposed road is not for traffic congestion but for a large housing project and a shopping complex in Survey No 44 area of Vetal Tekdi.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sushma Date, Member of Save Vetal Tekdi Panel said, “People from all walks of life come to spend some time in nature. They also do ecology walks, garbage cleanup & more. It is considered as the lung of the entire city. It is also an enriched source of groundwater, fresh air and more. However, the proposed Balbharati-Paud Phata Link Road work is going to destroy it. The real reason is not to reduce traffic congestion but to allot the land of Survey no 44 for a shopping mall and housing project and earn a lot of money at the expense of nature. Despite several requests, the PMC is not paying any attention. Hence, we decided to start a mass movement called ‘Power of Unity’ where Punekars can join us in large numbers to save the destruction of Vetal Tekdi.”
Deepak Shrote, Activist, Vasundhara Swachhata Abhiyan Pune said, “The Vetal Tekdi is the source of fresh oxygen and groundwater for the entire city. If they are destroyed, how will people breathe? Pollution will increase to unimaginable levels. If development is carried out by destroying nature, then it won’t do any good for any of us. Hence, I feel this move will be effective to stop the destruction of Vetal Tekdi.”
Date also informed that the movement has got a huge response of 400 to 500 participants in just 4 to 5 days. Soon, a website will also start.
The panel has appealed to people to participate in the movement.
