Pune, May 12, 2026: Amid complaints from residents in Mohammadwadi over plumbers allegedly demanding up to ₹50,000 for new water connections, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a clarification regarding the official process and charges for obtaining new water connections.

Pune Pulse was the first publication to raise the issue faced by the residents about overcharging by plumbing contractors.

According to PMC, the cost of a new water connection is determined based on the size and usage category of the connection. The civic body stated that it is the responsibility of the property owner to extend the connection from the main PMC water pipeline to the individual water meter, including installation of pipelines, valves, chambers, and other required fittings up to the water tank.

PMC clarified that applications for new water connections must be submitted online through licensed plumbers approved by the corporation. A list of 575 authorised plumbers has been published on the PMC website. The role of these plumbers includes obtaining licences, connecting water meters, carrying out pipeline work, and completing other technical tasks required for the installation process.

The civic body said the cost of the work may vary depending on the nature and scope of the project in each society or property. PMC also stated that it is not responsible for the rates quoted individually by plumbers. However, strict action will be taken if any plumber is found charging arbitrarily or spreading misinformation regarding PMC procedures.

To address concerns raised by residents, PMC had organised a help desk at Ganga Kingston in Mohammadwadi on May 9, 2026, where officials provided detailed information regarding the new water connection process.

PMC further clarified that societies already having authorised water connections should not apply again for new connections. In such cases, only the internal pipeline connection will be linked to the new PMC water line.

The civic body added that detailed information about the new water connection policy has already been shared with societies receiving water supply through tanker arrangements. Residents facing confusion regarding the process have been advised to contact the water supply department offices or refer to PMC’s official guidelines.
