Pune Rail Division Targets Passenger Safety, 105 Offenders Booked For Footboard Travel

Travelling on the footboard, steps, roof, or engine of a train is strictly prohibited under Section 156 of the Indian Railways Act, 1989. As per the Act, any person who continues to travel in such prohibited areas even after being warned by a railway servant is liable to:

Imprisonment for a term which may extend up to three months, A fine which may extend up to ₹500, or both. In addition, such passengers may be removed from the railway premises by the railway authorities.

Following the unfortunate incident in Mumbai on 09th June 2025, wherein some passengers reportedly lost their lives while travelling on footboards, Pune Division of Central Railway initiated a special intensive drive to curb such unsafe and life-threatening practices.

This intensive drive was carried out across all RPF posts under Pune Division from 11.06.2025 to 25.06.2025. During the campaign, a total of 105 passengers were apprehended for travelling on the footboard or steps of moving trains in violation of Section 156. Strict legal action was initiated against the offenders, and they are being produced before the court for prosecution.
