Pune Railway Station Theft: Police Recover and Return Jewellery Worth ₹10 Lakh to Elderly Man
Pune: The Government Railway Police (GRP) have recovered and returned jewellery worth ₹10.28 lakh to a 73-year-old man after it was stolen at Pune railway station earlier this year.
The incident took place in January when Shirish Vitthalrao Shitole, a resident of Anandpura in Madhya Pradesh, arrived at Pune railway station via the Indore-Daund Express. Four individuals, pretending to assist him with his luggage, opened his bag and stole a purse containing gold and silver ornaments worth ₹11.28 lakh.
Shitole immediately lodged a complaint with the railway police. Acting on the complaint, a police team led by Senior Inspector Pramod Khopikar analyzed CCTV footage from nearly 150 locations. This investigation led to the arrest of the accused, identified as Sumit Kumar Satvirsingh (30), a resident of Sultanpuri, Delhi.
Sumit Kumar was apprehended on January 24 from the railway yard in Pune’s Ghorpadi area. During the investigation, police recovered jewellery worth ₹10.83 lakh from him. After completing legal formalities, the stolen valuables were officially returned to Shitole on Friday.
The Pune GRP has urged passengers to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to prevent such incidents in the future.
