Pune, July 3: Continuous monsoon showers over the past three days have brought a noticeable drop in temperatures across Pune and nearby areas, with the city’s maximum temperature falling by around 5°C. As rainfall is expected to intensify, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the Ghat areas of Pune district from July 3 to July 5, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

The city witnessed steady rainfall throughout Thursday, with showers becoming heavier by evening. According to the IMD, Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 27.2°C and a minimum of 22.1°C. Other parts of Pune remained cooler, with Pashan recording 20.7°C and Lavale reporting 19.5°C.

Heavy rain during the evening led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and major road junctions, disrupting traffic across the city. Commuters experienced long delays as vehicles moved slowly through flooded stretches.

According to IMD’s 24-hour rainfall data recorded at 8:45 pm on July 2, Chinchwad received the highest rainfall at 9.5 mm, followed by Shivajinagar (7 mm), Lohgaon (4.6 mm), NDA (3 mm), Koregaon Park (0.5 mm) and Lavale (0.5 mm). Magarpatta did not record any rainfall during the period.

The IMD has warned that the Ghat sections of Pune district are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places expected to witness extremely heavy rain. Authorities have advised tourists, trekkers and motorists to avoid travelling to hill stations and Ghat routes unless necessary due to the risk of landslides, poor visibility and slippery roads.

For Pune city, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall over the next few days, with daytime temperatures expected to remain between 26°C and 28°C. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in the Ghat regions until July 5, while rain activity is expected to gradually reduce from July 7, with generally cloudy skies and intermittent showers continuing across the city.
