Pune, April 29, 2026: A long-locked public playground in Bavdhan has triggered growing anger among residents, with locals and members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announcing a “Tala Tod Andolan” (lock-breaking protest) on May 7.

The 3.5-acre ground, which is under the possession of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), has reportedly remained closed for several years, leaving children in the area without access to a proper recreational space.

Residents claim they have repeatedly approached civic authorities to reopen the playground. Between December 2025 and March 2026, several letters along with supporting documents were submitted to the PMC’s Sports and Estate departments, as well as to the Municipal Commissioner. However, locals allege that no concrete action has been taken despite multiple follow-ups.

Concerns have also been raised about the prolonged closure, with some residents questioning whether there are plans to allocate the land to a private entity.

Adding to the controversy, locals allege that during a follow-up meeting in March, it emerged that incorrect information may have been presented to the Municipal Commissioner by a senior official, potentially affecting decisions regarding the playground.

AAP leaders and residents have now called for a protest at 4 pm on May 7, warning of direct action if the ground is not opened.

Advocate Krunnal Gharre, AAP Pune City Vice President, stated that official land records confirm the playground belongs to PMC and should be accessible to the public. He also demanded an inquiry into the alleged misinformation.

Echoing concerns, Aarti Karanjawane, President of AAP’s Women and Children’s Wing in Pune, said the continued closure reflects neglect of children’s needs, forcing many to play on roads due to a lack of safe open spaces.

Local resident Sanket Joshi emphasised the importance of preserving open grounds amid rapid urbanisation, stating that children need accessible spaces for physical activity and overall development.

Residents have warned that if their demands are not addressed, the planned protest could intensify in the coming days.
