Pune, September 2, 2025: Residents have renewed their demand for the permanent closure of the Gera 77 gap on VIP Airport Road near Ramwadi Underpass, citing persistent traffic congestion and safety concerns.

In a letter addressed to Anirudha Pawaskar, head, PMC road department and Himmat Jadhav, DCP Pune Traffic Police, citizens highlighted that despite repeated requests over the last 10 months, the gap remains open, leading to frequent traffic jams.

The complaint was raised by Qaneez Sukhrani, Convenor, Association of Nagar Road Citizens Forum who seeks immediate attention to the problems raised by the local residents.

Reason for Closure

  • Vehicles attempting to take the service road to Nagar Road and Shri Jagdish Mullik’s office create a bottleneck.
  • Due to the road’s curve, vehicles coming from Kalyani Nagar are not easily visible, causing sudden bunching of traffic.

Suggested Alternative

Residents have proposed that the Joseph Colony gap, located about 20 meters away, be used for U-turns instead. They claim it is broader, offers better visibility, and ensures smoother traffic movement.

The letter urges immediate action to construct a permanent wall at the Gera 77 gap and avoid further inconvenience to daily commuters, stressing that this measure serves public interest.Drayson Dixon, a Kalyani Nagar resident stated, “The gap in the divider at G77 must be closed in order to facilitate free flow of traffic both in north and south bound lanes . This will also reduce accidents and human conflicts occurring on a daily basis.

Instead the gap 25 metres ahead where the road is much wider must be used. The G77 gap is poorly designed and wrongly located at a convergence point for four traffic flows. One southbound ascending from the Ramwadi underpass. Second from the eastern service road offshoot from nagar road. The third is the bypass from east avenue headed towards Nagar road and the fourth being the northbound  traffic to the underpass. A few months ago on the basis of series of complaints of this hazard from Residents of Kalyani Nagar, TSKN had submitted a letter to Addl CP Manoj Patil. We are still awaiting action.”
