The citizens of Pune City are facing a pressing issue with the discovery of leachate, a hazardous black liquid formed from decomposing waste, which has not been adequately managed at waste depots in Devachi Uruli and Fursungi. Leachate contains harmful chemicals and poses risks to human health.

Waste is typically segregated into wet and dry categories before disposal. At the Garbage Dump in Uruli, which ceased operations in 2020, non-disposable items such as textiles, mattresses, glassware, and chinaware are separated and discarded. Following recent investigations by the Municipal Commissioner, notices have been issued to officials to address the situation promptly.

Additional Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Kunal Khemnar, stated, “An inquiry has been initiated against the consulting engineers. While awaiting the reports, we plan to impose fines proportional to the damage caused. Further actions will follow within a week.”

Additionally, an alarming incident was reported at Vanaz, where leachate from garbage-carrying vehicles has been spilling on the roads during rainfall, making surfaces slippery and endangering commuters. The presence of leachate poses serious health risks and warrants careful disposal measures to avoid public inconvenience and harm.

In a recent incident, many two wheeler drivers fell on the road as the garbage carrying trucks spilled leachate on the road near Warje. The residents in the area demanded that PMC must take good care in covering the vehicles so that leachate doesn’t fall on the road and become an inconvenience to the citizens.
