Residents of the NIBM road, Pisoli, Mohammadwadi, and Undri have attributed the frequent flooding of roads during the rainy season to the leveling of hilly terrains for rapid construction and the overflow of drains. Making concrete roads have added to the problem as there is no space left for the water to seep into ground. According to the residents, real estate developments on the foothills  have significantly reduced the tree cover, causing rainwater to flood residential societies in Mohammadwadi. Societies in the low lying area situated at the base of the NIBM hill, are particularly affected during the monsoon.

Residents have also criticized the unchecked real estate projects that encroach on drains and narrow waterways, resulting in street and home flooding during heavy rain on Thursday. The nala is the area that has also been blocked by construction over them. Also, diverting the flow of the nala has affected greatly on water percolation. PMC, Environment department must take a survey of the area and clear the nala of debris and construction.

The increase of height of the culvert is also needed at many places in the city to reduce flooding as often nalas overflow and water starts accumulating on the road. Nala next to Sanskriti school is the best example.

The residents’ call for immediate action highlights the pressing need for sustainable development practices and robust infrastructure planning to mitigate the impact of urbanization on the environment and local communities.
